frequently asked question

Gorilla Trekking in Rwanda

  • Where: Volcanoes National Park (home to ~1/3 of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas).

  • Trek Style: Generally shorter and more accessible. Most treks range between 2–6 hours depending on the gorilla family’s location.

  • Infrastructure: Rwanda is highly polished for luxury travel. Roads are excellent, lodges are world-class (Singita, One&Only, Bisate, Sabyinyo), and logistics are seamless.

  • Permit Cost: USD 1,500 per person (discounts available for AU, Francophonie, and Commonwealth passport holders).

  • Best For: Travelers wanting a premium, time-efficient, and polished experience — often incentive groups, VIPs, and those short on time. Kigali is only a 2.5-hour drive from Volcanoes National Park, making logistics very smooth.

Gorilla Trekking in Uganda

  • Where: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park & Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

  • Trek Style: More rugged and adventurous. Treks can last anywhere from 3–7 hours, with steeper and denser terrain.

  • Infrastructure: Good but less developed compared to Rwanda. Lodges range from mid-range to luxury (Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp, Volcanoes Safaris Lodges, Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge).

  • Permit Cost: USD 800 per person (as of 2025), making it more affordable than Rwanda.

  • Best For: Adventurers seeking a more challenging trek, budget-conscious travelers, or those wanting to combine gorilla trekking with Uganda’s other highlights (the Nile, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth NP).

So, Which Should You Choose?

  • Rwanda if you want: shorter treks, luxury lodges, easy access, polished service, and exclusivity.

  • Uganda if you want: more adventure, longer hikes, affordability, and a chance to pair gorilla trekking with diverse wildlife safaris and river experiences.

Migration in Tanzania

  • Where: Serengeti National Park.
  • When: December to July (herds move across the Serengeti depending on rains and grasses).
  • Highlights:
    • Calving Season (Jan–Feb): In the Southern Serengeti, over 500,000 wildebeest are born in just a few weeks — and predators are everywhere.
    • Grumeti River Crossings (May–June): Dramatic crossings with giant Nile crocodiles.
    • Expansive Landscapes: The Serengeti is vast — you’ll often feel like you have the migration all to yourself.
  • Best For: Those who want a longer, quieter, and more immersive safari across a massive landscape.

Migration in Kenya

  • Where: Maasai Mara National Reserve.
  • When: July to October (herds move north into Kenya for greener pastures).
  • Highlights:
    • Mara River Crossings: The most iconic migration moments — wildebeest plunging into crocodile-filled waters.
    • Dense Predator Action: Lions, leopards, and cheetahs following the herds.
    • Cultural Experiences: Pair with Maasai village visits and community conservancies.
  • Best For: Those who want the “classic” migration safari imagery — dramatic river crossings, predator hunts, and high energy action.

So, Which Should You Choose?

  • Tanzania: Wider, less crowded landscapes, longer season, quieter safari. Perfect if you want space and a slower pace.
  • Kenya: Iconic river crossings, big drama, and intense predator action. Ideal if you want the National Geographic moment.

Many travelers do both: start in Tanzania’s Serengeti and follow the herds north into Kenya’s Mara — the ultimate migration circuit.
